HTML is an abbreviation
for HyperText Markup Language. HTML 3.2
became a W3C recommendation in January 1997
and is supported by a wide variety of Web
browsers, including Netscape version 2 and
later, and Internet Explorer version 3 and
later. Simple HTML is output conforms to
the HTML 3.2 standard. Simple HTML is the
format to use if you need to produce output
that can be viewed in older Web browsers
or if you need to avoid using Cascading
Style Sheets, Java applets, and JavaScript.
Live Linx can convert
your existing documentation and can create
Simple HTML pages for online viewing.

Dynamic HTML is
HTML output that conforms to the HTML 4
and XHTML 1.0 standards, and uses Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS) that conform to the CSS1
standard. HTML 4, XHTML 1.0 and CSS1 are
supported by most current browsers, including
Internet Explorer 4 and later, Netscape
6 and later, and, to a lesser extent, Netscape
4.x.
Dynamic HTML is
the right format to use if you need to produce
output that will be published on a Web or
intranet server and accessed by users with
current Web browsers (Internet Explorer
4 or later or Netscape 4.x or later).

Microsoft HTML
Help produces compiled Microsoft HTML Help
systems (.chm files). Microsoft HTML Help
is one of two Microsoft standards for delivering
online Help for Windows applications; the
other standard is Microsoft WinHelp.
Microsoft HTML Help
is the right format to use if you need to
produce online Help for a 32-bit application
that will run under Microsoft Windows 95,
98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP and you can be sure
that your users have, or are prepared to
install, Internet Explorer 4 or later.
HTML Help offers
some distinct advantages over standard HTML,
such as the ability to implement a combined
table of contents and index and the use
of keywords for advanced hyperlinking capability.
The HTML Help compiler (part of the HTML
Help Workshop) makes it possible to compress
HTML, graphic, and other files into a relatively
small compiled help (.chm) file, which can
then be distributed with a software application,
or downloaded from the Web.
HTML Help consists
of an online Help Viewer, related help components,
and help authoring tools from Microsoft
Corporation. The Help Viewer uses the underlying
components of Microsoft Internet Explorer
to display help content. It supports HTML,
ActiveX®, Java™, scripting languages
(JScript®, and Microsoft Visual Basic®
Scripting Edition), and HTML image formats
(.jpeg, .gif, and .png files).

Microsoft Windows
online Help (WinHelp) used to be Microsoft's
standard for delivering online Help for
Windows-based applications. HTML Help has
now replaced WinHelp as Microsoft's official
standard, but many companies are still delivering
WinHelp, which is robust and stable.

First introduced
in 1998, WebWorks Help is a delivery format
for online Help, online documentation, and
other online information systems.
The WebWorks Help
format is specifically designed to work
well across multiple platforms and multiple
browsers, making it an ideal format for
publishing information on the Web or on
an enterprise intranet. In addition, WebWorks
Help is designed for easy integration with
software applications written in C, C++,
Java, or Visual Basic, as well as Web-based
applications. As a result, it is easy to
create and deploy context-sensitive WebWorks
Help.

Sun JavaHelp is
an online Help system for applications written
in the Java programming language. JavaHelp
uses HTML files and Cascading Style Sheets,
but JavaHelp is not usually displayed in
a Web browser. Users will most likely view
the Help system in the JavaHelp viewer application
or in a custom viewer application created
by your application developers.
Sun JavaHelp is
a good choice if you need to create online
Help for an application written in the Java
programming language. If you need to create
online Help for a pure Java application,
the Sun JavaHelp format is the only one
you can use. If you are creating online
Help for a Java application not intended
to be a pure Java application, you may want
to use WebWorks Help instead.
Like many other
Help systems, JavaHelp includes a navigation
pane including Contents, Index, and Search
tabs, and a topic pane on the right, which
displays the Help topics.

XML is an abbreviation
of Extensible Markup Language (XML). XML
is formatted by Extensible Stylesheet Language
(XSL). XSL includes stylesheet settings,
the kinds you find in a cascading stylesheet
(CSS), and a powerful technology called
Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations,
or XSLT. XML+XSL format lets you create
rules that output specific data and perform
other functions, such as sorting data and
outputting data only if certain conditions
exist in the XML document. You can also
repurpose the data for different delivery
mechanisms (for example, XML or HTML for
display in a web browser or text for display
on a wireless phone).
